Summary/Abstract: Theatrical Adaptation of Yesterday to Today, for a Historical Approach. Adaptation is an ancient phenomenon which is a cultural practice of a wide variety and implementing more complex operations than the recent theoretical studies (semiotic, psycho-Linguistics, genetic...) were used to highlight. Here, we would like to adopt a historical perspective to understand the phenomenon of the theatrical adaptation today through its evolution. We will show that its definition, its form, its production issues and the motivation of its authors are variable parameters based on the historical, social and cultural context. Long in competition with the pure imitation, adaptation has gradually taken a distance from its source text encouraging the creativity of the author. It has thus helped the 19th century renew theatre and contributed to question the rules and push the boundaries of the genre. Questioning the creative act by giving the Director the hand, it has long been held responsible for the crisis of contemporary theatre and the author. Which takes nothing away from its nowadays vitality.
