Summary/Abstract: Against the background of the war in former Yugoslavia, the problem of ethnical identity acquires special topicality. In the author's view, this is not a new problem. A review of scientific writings of the past few decades, however, points to the need of studying and defining the concept of identity in a new way. The article is an attempt to outline the concepts of Serbian ethnical identity on the basis of the political folklore, coming to the fore in the new folk songs featuring political, military and patriotic motifs. The characteristics of the ethnic identity in the songs have been characterized: collective memory, common faith, common language, identical folk culture (tradition) and common territory. The model of Serbian identity has been revealed not only in "the language of hatred", which presupposes struggle against "the others", the opponents, the enemies. Accusations, threats, swearwords and the like are used as messages of hatred. They are a sui generis form of self-communication aimed at rallying the Serbs and mobilizing them in the struggle to preserve their ethnic identity and the Serbian name.
