Summary/Abstract: In this chapter, we present a preliminary description and classification of clinical decision support systems. We also present two philosophies of designing such systems, examples of which include: MET (Mobile Emergency Triage), a mobile system for supporting triage for patients with various kinds of acute pains, used in hospital emergency departments, and a portal available over a broadband network – Telemedycyna Wielkopolska – which facilitates communication and team working for users from different health care centres, and especially from centres of different expertise levels. Experience with the MET system indicates that there is a need for clinical decision support systems that conform to the adopted procedures and integrate with the existing electronic health record systems. On the other hand, the development of broadband networks and the increasing number of hospitals connected to them contribute to the growing interest in clinical portals for decision support.
