The word for ’North’ used by Heinrich Göseken and Johannes Gutslaff: Paiwata pôhl or pehwa pohl?

Summary/Abstract: The word for ’North’, pehwa pohl, in the grammar of Göseken (1660) seems to be semantically unmotivated, because typologically ’North’ is expressed with the absence of the sun, not with the presence of it. The word has not been properly researched earlier and it has been mentioned e.g. in Saareste’s dictionary. The correct expression seems to be Paiwata pôhl in the grammar of Gutslaff (1648). Perhaps the word, borrowed by Göseken from Gutslaff, was falsely printed without the Abessive ending. The data from Estonian and Finnish dialects support the opinion that only Gutslaff's variant is correct.
