Influence of megatrends on supply chain management – an example of Peak Oil

Summary/Abstract: Competition between supply chains in the next few decades will take place in a completely different global environment. This environment will be shaped by global megatrends being a consequence of the global financial crisis. The theory and practice of supply chain management must pay attention to the identification and assessment of the consequences of such trends. In particular this relates to Peak Oil, the peaking of and subsequent falls thereof in the prices of traditionally sourced crude oil. Using scenario analysis we can see that in the next few years we could already experience the worst of the “nightmare scenarios”: a quick decline in production of crude oil from traditional sources combined with a small adaptation to alternative fuels. This could lead to many existing supply chain concepts failing due to the rapidly increasing prices of crude oil. As research into using alternative oil based fuel sources is not pointing towards mitigation of the oncoming Peak Oil scenario, it is of paramount importance that the work on innovative and intelligent supply chain management increases to decrease the reliance on such fuels.
