Summary/Abstract: The models of masculinity and femininity, which governed human behaviour and personalities for centuries, seem to change rapidly, and we can observe that the traditional definition of gender roles has come to an end. The present essay tries to analyse this process with the eyes of a psychiatrist. It invites the reader to an interesting voyage in time and space to understand the struggle of modern women in defining themselves. The journey starts from the obedient housewife role, and leads to the combatant and self-conscious (wo)man. On the road, the reader encounters stories of patients from the 25 years of psychiatric praxis. Being a woman is an inspiring, difficult and beautiful adventure, requiring courage and self esteem. Its raison d'etre is to love and to be loved by maintaining intimacy with the self and with the community.
