Summary/Abstract: Born Argentinian, reared within Latin-American prose, Cortázar succeeds in encapsulating a glimpse of life in his kaleidoscopic maze of mirrors, perceiving the mysterious essence lurking beyond reality. One of the means through which this peculiar mystery unveils itself within human frame is the eros. This item is of a double nature in his writing: on the one hand, it seems to lie intrinsic within the human being, but on the other hand, it belongs to an unknown inexplicable universe. Due to the latter, this experience determines the person to live life in a perpetual attempt of ordering the unexpected, of taming its chaotic dynamics, of dominating this ”alter-ego”. With Cortázar, the mystery of the eros, as theme, is of psychological nature. It bursts forcefully within, often catching the character unawares, but it enables the person to reveal oneself in the way of touching the reality of the phenomenon. The eros is present in Cortázar’s prose under various instances, depending on the way it conjoins with other favourite themes as the game, time, the unexpected, death, illusion versus reality.
