Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the Macedonian language-use regime established in the post-2001 period with the incorporation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement in the legal system. The legislative framework is examined and is placed in relation to the linguistic rights offered to minority linguistic communities. The paper relies on two widely accepted theoretical distinctions, the first concerned with negative and positive linguistic rights, while the second with territorial and personal rights and seeks to place the Macedonian model within these classifications. Finally, the paper attempts to deliver a theoretical framework, suitable to view the Macedonian case, referred to as a ‘three-layered structure of holders of linguistic rights’, according to the scope of assigned rights. In this manner, the main benefits of different linguistic communities are discussed. The main conclusions underline the specific character of the Macedonian language-use regime, drawn by the national context.
