Summary/Abstract: The goal of this article is to shed new light on the problems of firm development and, specifically, the role of enrerpreneurs and managers in driving growth, by showing that firms often do not want to grow. Using deductive reasoning, supported with statistical data on firm and enterpreneurial behaviour, we show that firms are limited in their growth capabilities from within, and that regardless of the perceived rationality of economic agents, their decisions may not be fully explainable from the wealth-maximisation perpective.
