Phenomenography as a research approach within educational studies

Summary/Abstract: In this paper basic assumptions of phenomenographical approach and its procedural aspects are presented. Phenomenography is a research approach which was developed in Sweden in early 1970s. Since then the project of its epistemological base as well as its practical applications were developed. Phenomenography belongs to episemological 'second order' perspective, which orients towards people;s ways of seeing the world around them. Fundamental to an understanding of phenomenographical approach is to realise that its epistemological stance is premised of the principle of intentionality which affords a non-dualist view of human cognition that assumes human experience as the internal relationship between subject and the world. The aim of phenomenographical research is to describe qualitatively different ways of experiencing-conceptualising different phenomena.
