Summary/Abstract: The European Union clearly illustrates the possibility for the member states to achieve a high degree of economic integration while preserving their political sovereignty. EU membership is certain to reduce the autonomy of the countries in the conduct of macroeconomic policy and to create greater interdependence of economic policies, but the expectations are that the long-term net effects of integration will be positive. The newly-joined EU member states are willing to sacrifice a part of their national sovereignty in the field of economic policy in order to participate in the already proved successful project of integration, accepting the logic of serving their long-term interests.
