Summary/Abstract: The text represents a speech by the Special Representative for Southeast Europe of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Südosteuropa- Gesellschaft on February 7, 2002 in München. Schaefer outlines the challenges that the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft and the German Government are facing alike in their work with Southeast Europe. There, conflict prevention has become a primary task. The rapprochement of countries in the region into the Euro-Atlantic structures is the strategic goal, with close dialogue, enhancement of reforms and regional co-operation being the instruments for achieving these goals. The author briefly describes the current situation in Southeast European reform countries and continues with naming the immediate challenges ahead. Regional co-operation is considered to be an important precondition and a moving force for European integration. In this context, the main pillars of EU strategy towards Southeast Europe are (1) the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe and (2) the Stabilisation and Association Process towards Southeast Europe.
