Summary/Abstract: The International Crisis Group (ICG) has published a report on "Trepca: Making Sense of the Labyrinth" (Nov. 1999), which tries to disentangle the misinformation on the ownership of the Trepča conglomerate at Kosovska Mitrovica, provided by the Milošević clan. The report only deals with the situation actual at that time. But the question of the ownership should be discussed in its historical dimensions as well. Therefore, this paper tries to sketch the history of the Trepča problem, beginning with mining in Serbia in the 19th century. The two main keys to understand the Trepča ownership are the "Reports of the Directors" of Trepča Mines Ltd., London (1937-1956), and the three constitutions of former Yugoslavia (1946, 1963, and 1974).
