Summary/Abstract: In recent years, ideology seems to have been progressively replaced by mythology. In Slovenia and its vicinity, central to this new »political« mythology is Europe. By its origin, Europe is a myth at the core of which is rape. As a loose geographical notion, Europe came to be politically relevant when, with the waning of the Middle Ages, the formation of Europe as political community took place. Constitutive of Europe as political community was ethnic cleansing. What lies at the heart of Western collective identity is the hatred of the Muslims. With the rise to prominence of antipolitics, Europe is once again becoming, to an ever greater degree, a myth. As such, it has been realized in the war against Bosnia. Democracy, being at the centre of the European myth, is civil religion: a fundamentalist religion of the post-fundationalist era. It is the religion of the world that calls itself secular, the godless Christianity.
