Agriculture and its tranformations within the territory of the present-day Katowice in the 19th and 20th century

Summary/Abstract: The Katowice economy in the nineteenth and twentieth centurie is uniquely associated with the dominance of heavy industry, while the landscape with mine shaft towers, chimneys of factories and steel mills and slag heaps. However, in addition to industry in the area of Katowice, tere was and still is agriculture, both in terms of cultivation and animal husbandry. His nature and extent have changed over time. However there is a permanent reduction of the arable land. In the northern districts we deal with al most complete disappearance of agriculture, while in the southern districts it is still of some importance. Changes in crop and livestock have been presented on the basis of Felix Triest’s Topographisches Handbuch von Oberschlesien, nineteenth-century historiographical sources and statistical sources of the twentieth century.
