Summary/Abstract: The paper Interpreting vs. cultural mediation: references to the Spanish educational system aims at offering a perspective on the current debate regarding the competencies required from a cultural mediator and those of a “public service interpreter”. From the point of view of a communicative situation, most scholars argue in favour of a dialogical approach in the case of a “public service interpreter”, with all the consequences deriving from that. The steps towards the definition of a new profession are also discussed as well as the relationship between cultural mediation and interpreting in education settings, with reference to the immigrants’ integration in the Spanish educational system.
