Summary/Abstract: Some background information: After Bulgaria joined the pan-European project again not too long ago, all the Balkan states are well represented there now. The activities of the respective national committees range from the elicitation of the data to their evaluation from narrower national limits to broader language groups leading finally to data syntheses that incorporate the various language families of Europe. The Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE) is, primarily, an interpretative word atlas. Among the methods to interpret the geolexical data, motivational mapping is an innovative one and the most important one to illustrate Europe's cultural history. It asks for the motives in designating certain objects. Only transparent compounds can be taken into account.
