Summary/Abstract: Growing worldwide demand for food and renewable energy has recently caused pressure on land resources. Governments and corporations partcipate in large-scale land acquisitions in foreign countries. Exceptional growth of these cross-border transactions often accompanied by violation of the human and property rights of indigenous people and threateningthe sustainable development, is in fact a global process of land grabbing. The aim of this paper is to present the nature, scale and consequences of this phenomenon and promote a debate on land appropriation in EU countries in the context of property rights of the local population. The existence of different theories of property rights arises difficulty in defining and enforcing the rights to agricultural land.
