Summary/Abstract: Some fifteen years since the collapse of Communism in Hungary and the dissolution of the Communist Party it may be a good time to look back over the first quarter-century of the party’s existence and place it in historical perspective. The brief survey that follows examines published sources and the secondary literature and suggests what the main trends in post-World War II historiography have been; it describes the organization, goals, and tactics of the Communist Party; and it assesses the party’s role in the international Communist movement and its relations with other parties and group on the left in Hungary. If this discussion points the way to further research and reflection, then it will have been worthwhile.
