Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt of a typological classification of water names in the Olt River basin, which considers the 622 names of waters registered in the Atlas of Water Cadastre in Romania. Historians and linguists acknowledge that the oldest toponymic layer is represented by hydronyms, specifically names of big waters. Simple hydronyms may come from appelatives, from anthroponyms or from other toponyms. In the present study, we shall refer to the simple hydronyms formed from anthroponyms. Within this category, we can distinguish several structural types, namely: - hydronyms formed from masculine anthroponyms, in singular; - hydronyms formed from feminine anthroponyms in singular and hydronyms formed from anthroponyms in plural. For each denomination of water we considered the geographical characteristics, related to location, length, affluents, crossed localities, the attestation of the denomination and some linguistic remarks regarding the typology, genesis and etymology of the respective hydronym.
