Summary/Abstract: The study presents an attempt at identification of a "small ethnic group", the Greeks, in Bulgarian society. The author explores the inter-ethnic relations between the Greek population in Bulgaria, on one hand, and the Bulgarians, on the other, during three periods of Bulgaria's history: from 1879 to World War I, the inter-war period, and the post-WW II period. Special attention has been paid to the impact which the mass migrations following the Balkan Wars and World War I had on the Greeks in Bulgaria. Greeks have always lived in cities in Bulgaria. Greek communities enjoyed high social prestige and the Greek population was not considered "troublesome" by the Bulgarian authorities. The author makes some interesting observations on the social status of the Greek population in contemporary Bulgarian society which are based on material collected on field trips to Greek-populated areas in the country. Further, the 1992 census showed that, in Bulgaria, there are non-Greek ethnic groups with "pro-Hellenic" orientation, like the Greek-speaking Karakatchans.
