Summary/Abstract: This article, fi rst published in Mind (July, 1950), presents the most famous challenge which has been directed against Russell’s theory of descriptions. The author argues that Russell made at least two mistakes. He did not fully realize that a sentence can have a variety of uses, and he mistakenly thought that every meaningful sentence must be either true or false. Strawson concludes that Russell’s theory is unnecessary since the problem it was designed to solve does not exist.
