Summary/Abstract: The study is devoted to one of the most “exotic” novels by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz Ucieczka do Bagdadu (The Escape to Baghdad). The author analyses Iwaszkiewicz’s admiration for the exotics of East, traces the historical and biographical sources of his novel. The work is defined as a “fairy exotic novel”, a “stylization of adventure romance” and a “modernist pastiche”. In particular, the heroes’ “only true search” for happiness is considered as a typically modernist strategy. Moreover, the author marks some homoerotic moments in the novel.
