Summary/Abstract: The growth of remittances last three decades was strong until the last quarter of 2008th while in 2009 their fall, at the global level, estimated at -7.3%. The increase in the inflow of remittances in Serbia in 2009 is surprising, despite the World Bank estimates their strong decline in Europe and Central Asia (-14.9%). Indicators for 2009 indicate the gross amount of 4.2 billion dollars, but the methodology is questionable. Remittances, which are practically realized savings of domestic workers abroad, are significant because they are used for funding, primarily trade balance deficit. For now, remittances contribute, primarily, financial and social stability in Serbia, while, at the current way of their use (most goes to consumption), far less important from the standpoint of developmental functions.
