Between Civility and Residentship – the Images of the Inhabited City and the Continuity of Urbanity

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to present urbanity and citizenship from the viewpoint of residence and habitation of the city. The field research took place in the city of Plovdiv, chosen and considered here as a model of a big Bulgarian city.The changes in the urban settings, ways of life, appropriation and habitation of the urban spaces and the neighborhoods, in particular, are put in the larger context of Bulgarian urbanization. For that purpose, the article presents a case study of one neighborhood in Plovdiv, built in the 70’s and 80’s, as a preliminary architectural and demographic plan and as a civil, urban and ritualistic entity. Some of the changes in the social and spatial organization after 1989 are also mentioned.
