The Aims of an Anthropological Approach to Citizenship

Summary/Abstract: If citizenship is still often seen as a purely juridical notion, many aspects of this „political object“ make it a particularly relevant point of entry for anthropologists wishing to understand and analyze central stakes in contemporary societies, such as the relationships between on the one hand normative or legal definitions of citizenship and social practices and representations on the other; between identity(ies) and citizenship. But exploring such issues requires clarifying the very manner citizenship is defined: as a status or a capability. To question citizenship is thus necessarily to question politics itself.
