Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Bulgarian virtual geography and the role of the digital cities in it. Special attention is given to the problem of centralization and urbanization of the web. The reasons for the concentration of the Internet content production in the capital are discussed. Digital cities are represented through the perspective of the historical penetration of the web in the country. The relationship between the big national Internet portals and the local digital cities is specially analyzed. The reasons for tension between ‘local’ and ‘national’ on the web are discussed. The domination of urban and lifestyle culture on the Internet is considered in connection with the role of the predominantly based in Sofia new information elites. As a conclusion the text comments the preserved significance of real places in virtual geography which remains closely linked with spatial categories.
