Metamorphoses of the Building Process during the Post-liberation Period in Sofia (1878-1912)

Summary/Abstract: The paper tries to analyze the process of origin and construction of the first new public buildings in post-liberation Sofia. It studies the problem of introducing of new practices in the building process; the appearance of the architect and the engineer professions; the need for modern technical knowledge and the transformation of the craftsman skills. The aim of the paper is to reveal the relationships between modern and traditional practices and actors in the building process, and to show their peculiar combination in the context of the post-liberation political and building world.
