Summary/Abstract: European avant-garde turned the circus into one of the most important subjects of their artistic endeavors. It was the circus artist in whose performances reality uncovered it’s otherwise hidden under the mask of civilization faces while the world is constantly toppled over by acrobats and clowns. This personifies the main direction of avant-garde art – the destruction of the visible in its characteristic of the only possible subject for the modern artist. The Bulgarian artists of the 1960s and 1970s also touched upon this topic. But this interest of Bulgarian art of the 1960s and 1970s for the circus was not just a question of fashion. This subject provides possibilities to experiment freely in the sphere of color, rhythm, stylization and metaphor in the framework of the prestigious for its time figural composition. Many artists went beyond the formal grounds and engaged themselves with a different study of the theme: they saw the potential also for creating contrast between the real and the imaginary world. They disengaged themselves from the ‘now and here’ in order to jump in another dimension - that of the fairy scenes and weightlessness.
