Summary/Abstract: The railway system has marked Russia’s history in past two hundred years and has created a whole culture and ideology. It has represented not only a state affair, but a state within a state. Each new regime made efforts to recreate it as a legitimation and confirmation of its own power. But it has also represented a form of contact between people, thus becoming a part of life itself. The essay shows how the introduction of a new high-speed train has changed the life style of the Russians, transforming them into a „jet-set“ type of society. An excursion into the Russian social, political and economic life.
