Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes how the most frequently occurring cohesive devices of spoken discourse help to realize several discursive strategies, thus determining not only the formai unity of a text but also the speaker's subjective aims and evaluations. The paper aims to present the results of the comparative descriptive analysis of the types of logical and compositional arrangement of cohesive elements in the chosen unit of spoken discourse, namely the conversational turn, and focuses on the capability of the identified patterns to realize one or another discursive strategy. The examination of ten randomly selected English TV interviews and the same amount of Lithuanian TV interview data showed that such cohesive elements as conjunctions, pronouns, particles and discourse markers, specifically patterned within a conversational turn, revealed three basic discursive strategies: mitigation, intensification, and framing. The study demonstrated both similarities and differences in the structural realization of these strategies in the two languages. In most cases, the differences were determined by the distinctive structural features of the languages studied as well as the unique properties of cohesive items.
