ORTHODOX METROPOLITAN ANDREI SAGUNA AND THE AUTOCEPHALY OF THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Summary/Abstract: Orthodox Metropolitan Andrei Saguna and the Autocephaly of the Romanian Orthodox Church. From the second half of the XIXth century, Transylvania was tormented by various political, social and religious events to which the Transylvanian Romanians and their religious hierarchs brought an unanimous contribution. Nevertheless, the most impressive figure for the Transylvanian Romanian emancipation was the Orthodox metropolitan Andrei Saguna. Being a theological scholar, a diplomat gifted with the sense of reality, a political figure and forefather of his nation, a follower of the civic and political activism, he contributed to the re-establishment of the old Orthodox Metropolitan Church in Transylvania, dissolved in 1701. Because of his insistence, on 24th of December 1864, the Bishopric of Sibiu is heightened in rank of Metropolitan, with full autonomy.
