Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of a study on the word-formational features of scholarly terms as derivational bases. It shows that scholarly terms are characterized by a non-uniform derivational activity which is lower than that of non-terminological nouns and which is mainly focused on founding suffixal derivatives and compounds (in particular with Greek and Latin elements) and further, by lack of uniformity in the degree of reproductivity, the share of word-formational techniques and the origin of the base. Foreign descent, complex structure or extensive phraseology are not decisive factors for the terms’ derivational potential. Substantial is the location of the terminological meaning among other meanings: bases whose terminological meaning is described as primary in dictionaries (is ranked one), build more derivatives. Biological terms are a special group due to their above-average word-formational activity (uniformity and reproductivity), a high share of nouns and adjectives among the derivatives (including noun compounds and structures with foreign elements), and an extensive net of phraseological combinations (mainly terminological idioms).
