Summary/Abstract: The author identifi es and analyzes the role of the famous Bosnian friar and reformist, Ivan Frano Jukić (1818-1857), in the process of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s modernization in the mid 19th century. She depicts the difficult and complex social, political, economic and cultural circumstances of the Christian population and Jukić’s attempts to establish a modern, democratic state in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
