Summary/Abstract: In this paper the origin and symbolic significance of the Greek Orthodox liturgical vestments are presented, relying on pictorial evidence and literary sources and testifying to the fact that Byzantine customs are withheld with meticulous care up to modern times recently shown by the last inthronisation of the Russian patriarch where the ecclesiastical authority prevailed over the official delegates as was the case in Byzantium.
