Summary/Abstract: Marta Milewska’s controversial series of photographs, originally to be shown at the Central Railroad Station in Poznań, was entitled “The Way of the Cross”. The directors of the Station refused to give their permission for the show. Milewska photographed homeless people in Bratyslawa and Poznań. The homeless, in their own, unsophisticated way, mimicked the martyrdom of Christ and the behaviour of his oppressors on the Way of the Cross. The artist referred to the tradition of the Medieval folk theatre which used religious themes in their street performances. Milewska showed not only the beggars, but, also, ugly backyards of modern cities. Her work resembles pictures by such artists as, for example, Corinth, Grosz, Kokoschka, Dix, Nolde, and Rotluf. They interpreted Biblical themes in un-orthodox ways.
