It is considered that Balzac has developed a mythical imaginary of the city, a metaphorical and allegorical picture of the becoming modern metropolis. The critics have developed various conceptions of it, from the myth of the modern hero to the one of the legibility of the city, or of urban allegories and metaphors. The purpose of my paper is to study these positions and to reconsider them through a reflection on the nature of the literary city, its intelligibility and its consideration as the representation of the spatial thought of the writer.
