Historical premises of the demographic transition in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: The demographic transition in Bulgaria is related to a complex of economical, cultural, religious, political, and social factors. It has been affecting preferably the rural population having sufficient culture in order to plan the family in the conditions of natural disasters as well as economical and social crises. At the late seventies of the 19th Century, the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke (1878) had place at a low natality level and a rapid transition towards very high indices during the period 1880-1900 is the main peculiarity of Bulgarian demographic transition. The transition began at the beginning of the 20th Century when very high natality prevailed resulting in high natural growth. However, Bulgarian population reached more rapidly the demographic indices of other European countries and the zero level of the natural increase.
