Summary/Abstract: Commercial Indian films are often referred to as “masala movies”, which fully defines their character. Like a traditional mix of Indian spices, the films include elements characteristic of various film genres. However, Bollywood-made cinema is very specific as it has developed features typical only of its poetics. Szurlej tries to identify and define qualities of popular Indian cinema. She briefly describes its history, development of typical poetic elements and its political background – the cinema of Bollywood dictates the culture and language of northern India to other regions that in turn defend themselves by producing own films. Szurlej analyses a function of these typical elements; the autonomous musical sequences or the recurring motifs reflecting the characteristic cultural codes of the region of the world.
