Summary/Abstract: Analysing Paul Bogart’s film "Torch Song Trilogy" (1988) Kulpa tries to join the discussion on the question of what “gay cinema” is. Although paradoxically very popular among homosexual community members, the film uses strong stereotypes that do not necessarily benefit gay and lesbian groups. In his analysis Kulpa cites the identity theories of Marcel Mauss, Immanuel Kant and Judith Butler and culture theories of Ruth Benedict, Ewa Nowicka and Ralph Linton. Tracing the method according to which the characters of the film heroes are built, he reflects on the meaning of an individual in a web of social relations.
