Summary/Abstract: Rutkowska writes about France’s “rural cinema”, the trend stemming from Georges Rouquier’s films "Farrebique" and "Biquefarre". The films are numbered among documentaries although their heroes are real peasants delivering lines written by a screenwriter and performing situations that have been created for them. But at the same time they do their everyday chores, and the films faithfully depict the reality of a life in the countryside. Nicholas Philibert’s famous film "To Be and To Have" is rooted in the trend but speaks a language typical for modern cinema. The hero is a charismatic teacher looking after a group of children at a “single class” school. The film started a debate in France on the obligations of the documentary filmmaker and boundaries between creation and a documentary film and the right to filmed reality following a copyright suit the teacher filed against the artists.
