Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the consequences of the expansion of English both in its use as a second language in many countries and as the lingua franca for international communication. The paper also discusses the emergence of various local varieties and the fragmentation of English into several forms of usage (ESL, EFL, ELF) as well as the pedagogical implications of this phenomenon.
