Summary/Abstract: In Eastern Europe since the Second World War, Marxism has commonly been associated with its role as the dominant or ruling ideology, a system of thought which served to legitimize the activities of the Communist party in any given country in the process of "socialist transformation." While this role has certainly been one aspect of Marxism, or Marxist thought in Eastern Europe, one which has continued virtually to the present, it has by no means been the only one played there. Marxist thought has simultaneously served as the source of a far-reaching critique of that ideology. This second aspect of Marxism in Eastern Europe is one that has only gradually been appreciated by many outside of the area.
