Poetics of Non-continuity and Openness in David Lynch’s Films

Summary/Abstract: Jelińska discusses the issues of non-continuity and coherence in the poetics of David Lynch’s films, putting a particular emphasis on a system of narrative. She does not try to critically interpret but to analyse the successive layers of narrative, starting from the presented story through a film discourse to the play with viewers. She attempts to show the multifunctional character of the presented elements which take on even contrastive meanings depending on the paradigm adopted by the film director. It is Jelińska’s intention to show that despite these complexities, incohesion and multi-coding of the narrative the films should be perceived as a highly organized and well thought-out whole.
