Summary/Abstract: A paradoxical situation emerges – there are a lot of different methods of acting, original systems of actor’s training and various acting theories, yet non-professional actors appear on the stage more and more frequently. Although in Lithuanian theatre this tendency is not very distinct compared with the Western theatre, the participation of non-professional actors in contemporary performances is not a rarity any more. This situation provokes endless discussions about the devaluation of actor’s art and raises the question whether contemporary Author’s theatre needs trained professional actors at all. This article focuses on the dominant acting practices of non-professional actors and explores the reasons which stimulate theatre directors to work with performers who do not have acting experience.
