Republic of Yemen 1990-2006: On the Way towards Democracy or back to Authoritarianism?

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the analysis of the Republic oj Yemen in the system of non-democratic regimes during 1990-2006. The main research aim is based on a hypothesis that the current political regime in Yemen is neither fully democratic nor fully authoritarian. Based on the presumption is theory of hybrid regimes of L. Diamond. The subsidiary aim of the research is to respond to the question if it is still possible to think about present Yemen as a transitional country. ln order to fully understand functioning mechanisms inside the state, an analysis of civil society functions and position of lslamists and study of a tribal-military-commercial complex. It is possible to state that the transition bringing considerable changes is not going ahead, yet, it is possible to apply T. Carothers 's concept of 'the transitional paradigm '. Taking into consideration the fact that Yemeni current most poweiful party cannot be regarded as a hegemonic party, it is stated that the current Republic of Yemen is close to the point of competitive authoritarian regime.
