Summary/Abstract: A certain alliance of ideology and interests between the social democratic left and political parties primarily oriented toward so-called national interests is one of the characteristic features of Slovak politics. Nationally-oriented politics in Slovakia has had in some respects a significantly left-wing cast, which has rather deep historical reasons. The strong influence of political entities emphasizing the importance of national and social values (HSLS, HZDS) has been a characteristic feature of Slovak politics. Another feature has been the national-left political orientation of many Slovak politicians and intellectuals at the present, as well as in the recent past (many representatives of KSS, HZDS, SDL, SNS or SMER). Recently, the mutual alliance between the social democratic left and national conservative right has been strengthened, with respect to the coalition of their current representatives - the social democratic SMER and nationalist SNS. ln recent years, both parties have deepened their collaboration on both programme (programme agenda based on the combination of national and social values) and interest aspects (sharing power, efforts to eliminate the influence of their political rivals, especially SDKU and SMK). SMER and SNS are deepening their ideological and interest alliance within the government coalition, and thus contribute to even greater diffusion of social democratic and nationally-oriented politics.
