Summary/Abstract: Tourism is a modern socio-economic phenomenon affecting several sectors of the national economy of each country. A precondition for successful tourism development is sufficient quality of accommodation, since it is considered to be a key factor within infrastructure services of every tourist destination. The important milestone in the development of modern tourism in Slovak Republic was the year 1989, when fundamental social, political and economic changes happened. Historical sources showed that the tourism industry was traditionally fighting for its place in the economic structure of Slovak Republic and was undergoing the significant changes for the last quarter of 20th century. Regarding above mentioned, the aim of the paper is to identify the main trends in tourism and hotel industry in Slovak Republic in 1989-2000.
