Summary/Abstract: The end of the political crisis in Romania and the beginning of the Lascar Catargiu Government also signified a temporary political decline of Manolache Costache Epureanu. His failure in 1870 (the ephemeral government of the “young right” party) marked his return on the parliamentary scene. The polemics with his Liberal opponents have continued until the Conservative government led by Lascar Catargiu took office (March 1871). Afterwards, Manolache Costache was among the initiators of the Petition of Iaşi. Formally, the document contained ambitious proposals concerning authoritarian constitutional reforms. The real strategy followed by Manolache Costache Epureanu was to create confusion between the conservative coalition partners, in order to recover the position of “head of the right”. The failure of his initiative led to a change in position; the politician had consistently supported the government Catargiu until October 1872, when he became minister of justice in the cabinet. But it is precisely in that stage that we have to look for the beginning of the crisis that was going to push him aside, for a long time and with spectacular consequences, from the government and the alliance of the conservatives.
