Summary/Abstract: Although plagued by occupations and corruption, Grigore Alexandru Ghica’s reign in Moldavia (1849–1853 and 1854–1856) was characterized by various efforts towards the improvement and renewal of all domains of government, one of them concerning the town planning measures. In our opinion, these efforts manifested themselves in two ways: the pecuniary gifts offered by the Prince and the institutional, organized initiatives coming from his government. While the first was illustrated by, for instance, the payment for the completion of an acqueduct, the second had as main objective the paving of most of Iaşi’s streets. However, it is noteworthy that the first type of measures had more immediate success than the second, which was negatively affected by lack of experience, by delapidations and by its lessened financial importance, especially during the periods of foreign occupation.
